I was not much of a fan of abstraction. A young man, I dismissed Jackson Pollock, for example, until I saw his work at The Met. In the flesh his work gained great depth, almost 3d. I was stunned. It was a lesson that while good reproductions can be suggestive, there is no substitute for artwork in the flesh.
